College & Career Services

College & Career Services is off to a great start for SY 2017-2018!

With an eye toward more a diverse college admissions season, we have signed up with RepVisits through Naviance. Already we are seeing college admissions representatives from schools our students had not considered, like the University of Rochester and M.I.T.

23 students took the ASVAB on October 5th. Even though it is often touted as the “entrance exam for the military,” WMST favors the ASVAB as a career assessment tool. We encourage our students to consider options with the United States Military as a way of obtaining an affordable, top-quality education AND a career. The next Accuplacer test date will be April 5, 2018.

All students in grades 9-12 will be involved in testing on October 11th when they take the PSAT and the SAT in school. The stakes are high for Juniors, as the tests counts as the qualifying exam for National Merit Scholarships. Likewise for Seniors, it is their chance to show colleges what they’re made of!

Through our partnership with the University of the District of Columbia, some WMST students have already begun earning college credits – for free! Two sophomores have already taken and passed courses there, and several more students have applied for Spring enrollment. The deadline to apply is October 15th. Accuplacer exams will be given at UDC-CC on October 7th and 14th

For Seniors, it is both College Admissions AND Financial Aid Season! The Free Application for Federal Student Aid became available on October 1st, and our students were ready! The Department of College & Career Services with our DC-CAP Advisor Ms. Leonard hosted a series of “Food & FAFSA” parties – work sessions designed to motivate students to complete the step before completing the FAFSA – obtaining an FSA ID. There were pizza, soda, chips and even door prizes on either side of the students creating the unique login and signature credentials.

A month ago, the Department of College & Career Services opened the doors to Room B-110, now rebranded as the College & Career Center. With a plethora of college pennants colorfully marking the space as college territory, the space is being utilized for Senior Seminar classes, College Rep Visits, College Admissions & Financial Aid Nights and simply for getting any college-related work accomplished, such as completing admissions applications.

In September, Ms. Lincoln (Director of College & Career Services) attended the NACAC Convention (National Association for College Admission Counseling) in Boston, MA. The Workshop “Developing a Dynamic College Counseling Program” was well worth the investment! We aim to spread the college –going culture all over WMST, and it’s already happening! Even the English Department decorated a beautiful and inspiring board!
